In this episode of The Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m happy to bring you a conversation with brand strategist and visual artist, Susan Meier, about the importance of integrating creativity at work, even and especially in jobs not traditionally considered creative. Susan is the founder of Susan Meier Studio, and she is on a mission to dispel the myth that creativity and strategy are at odds to help business leaders electrify their work and amplify their impact.
Susan has developed a unique point of view that is driven by the merger of analytical and creative thinking. She’s designed a set of processes and tools that get teams to problem-solve more creatively, helping them define their mission, vision, and differentiators with clarity and bring their brands to life in the world. She has gravitated toward healthcare, which offers up the exciting challenge of finding creative solutions for some of the most complex problems out there today.
I believe Susan’s work is critically important, even and especially in roles and industries that aren’t accustomed to relying on creativity in their normal functioning. I believe that creativity has a place in every workplace and in every position on the organizational hierarchy. Creativity and strategy working hand-in-hand when it comes to problem solving, leadership, and even branding. It is this holistic approach of uniting seemingly opposed domains that lies at the heart of Transformative Leadership. If anything, I’m living proof of that, as my background is in mechanical engineering, but I’m firmly entrenched in teaching and practicing the “soft skills“ of leadership and culture transformation. Susan Hamilton Meier is the founder of Susan Meier Studio. As a visual artist, she explores the interplay of strategy and chance. Her work is in the private collections of Saatchi & Saatchi and Pfizer and has been exhibited at the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art. Susan began her career in strategy at the Boston Consulting Group, where she became fascinated by the deep personal relationships brands can forge with their customers. For over 20 years, she has helped build the world’s leading brands, with corporate clients like Pepsico, Unilever, Whirlpool, Samsung, Genentech, Novartis, Aetna and WebMD.
