About this Episode:

In this episode of the Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m happy to bring you a conversation with master encourager, motivational speaker, and author, Michael Arterberry, about how to shift our perspective so that we can thrive not only in spite of the challenges and adversity we face in life, but as a direct result of them. As a speaker, Michael has been motivating, inspiring and changing the lives of teenagers and adults since 2008, when he founded Youth Voices Center, a non-profit with the mission of helping young people to become active, productive members of society by overcoming their obstacles, their history, stereotypes and even their own self-image and limiting beliefs. His recent book is Be Encouraged: 250 Days of Motivation and Encouragement, a book of daily motivations.

As a teenager, Michael was fortunate to receive guidance from positive adult role models who helped him overcome adversities and set high expectations for his future. Grateful for the role these mentors played in his own development, Michael decided to dedicate his professional life to helping people navigate the difficulties of life and launch their future into motion. For more than 25 years, he has been helping teens and adults to use what they have gone through as a catalyst for success rather than an obstacle for failure.

As you can tell from the longer-than-average runtime of this episode, I really enjoyed the conversation with Michael. While the topic isn’t as business-focused as our usual episodes, but the insights Michael share in our conversation are powerful and transformative on a fundamental level that undergirds both personal and professional transformation. I also feel like Michael’s message about turning our trauma, obstacles, and challenges into fuel for our growth and thriving is a timely message we could all use right now.

Those who follow me know that I am a big advocate for extracting lessons from life experience and studying diligently in the “school of hard knocks,“ and Michael is definitely a kindred spirit in that regard. It’s difficult to sum up everything we cover in our discussion, so suffice it to say, this is a powerful episode with a powerful guest, so be sure to check it out!

Some topics discussed in this episode include:

  • How Michael’s early experiences led to his passion for motivating and encouraging people to turn obstacles into victories.

  • Mindset tips for using our challenges, obstacles, and trauma as fuel for growth and prosperity.

  • How to face and overcome adversity, even when things seem hopeless.

  • Why taking a holistic view of life is key to developing resilience and even antifragility.

  • And much more…

Michael Arterberry is the founder of Youth Voices Center and the author of Be Encouraged: 250 Days of Motivation and Encouragement. Michael received the 2010 USA Network’s Characters Unite Award for exceptional commitment to combating prejudice and discrimination while increasing tolerance and acceptance within the community. He is also the recipient of the 100 Men of Color Award for leadership in 2014. Additional information about his struggles as a child and a debilitating spinal cord injury as an adult can be found in his wife's book, God was Holding My Hand.
