About this Episode:

In this episode of the Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m happy to bring you a conversation with author, speaker, and leadership expert, Tim Spiker, about insights related to the single most important element of leadership effectiveness, i.e. who we are and how we show up, as leaders. Tim is the founder of The Aperio, an organization that helps people become, be, and stay leaders who are actually worth following. Tim’s newest book, which comes very highly recommended, is The Only Leaders Worth* Following.

For over 20 years, Tim has been helping individuals and organizations do one thing: lead better. He is dedicated to crafting better leaders not by sharing secret tips, but by helping them find the leadership potential within themselves—even when doing so is HARD! Tim and his team do just that: they help professionals uncover the true leadership potential that is lying within them. In his practice and his book, Tim expounds on the “Who* Not What Principle,” a profound research-based truth that reveals that 77% of leadership effectiveness comes from who a leader is and not only what they do. Tim’s work includes delivering keynote talks, creating unique and customized learning experiences, and guiding long-term development journeys.

This is personally one of my favorite episodes we’ve ever done, so I’m going just say right off the bat: don’t miss this one! As you might have guessed by now, Tim is definitely someone I would consider a kindred spirit, and in more ways than one. We are both former engineers, based in Atlanta, who have leadership development practices, both founded on the fundamental conviction that each one of us has inherent leadership potential within us that only needs to be uncovered and unleashed! It was great to talk to a kindred spirit who really gets what, when it comes to leadership, our “being“ is far more important than simply “doing“ or “knowing“ what to do. This is something that is critical to the philosophy of Transformative Leadership, and it’s always nice to know one is in good company.

Suffice it to say, I really enjoyed our conversation, and I can’t recommend Tim’s work, his book, or this episode highly enough. So be sure to give this episode a listen and check out Tim’s website as soon as you’re done!

Some topics discussed in this episode include:

  • How Tim discovered his passion and curiosity for leadership and followership, at a multi-level marketing sales event, of all places.

  • The fascinating story behind the research around 77% of a leader’s effectiveness coming from who they are being, rather than only what they are doing.

  • What it means and why it is so important for leaders to be “inwardly sound and outwardly focused.“

  • What people often misunderstand about empathy, self-awareness, and other soft skills, when it comes to being a great leader.

  • And much, much more…

Tim Spiker has been passionately investigating leadership effectiveness since 1999. Tim is the founder of The Aperio and the Who* Not What Principle, a profound research-based truth that has powered 15 years of leadership development success. He delivers keynote speeches and creates unique and customized learning experiences to effectively change the way people look at leadership in the short term, as well as guiding long-term developmental journeys. He also speaks on developing leaders who are inwardly sound and others focused, about leadership culture especially to those in HR, and even shares insight for those with hiring/firing responsibilities. Tim has worked with leadership teams in North America, Australia, and Asia. He currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife and four children.
