About this Episode:

This is our 100th episode of the podcast, a milestone we could only reach thanks to the enthusiasm and support of all our listeners! We are very grateful to everyone who has followed us on this journey, and we look forward to bringing you even more value on the show as we move into our next hundred episodes and more!

In this episode of the Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m happy to bring you a conversation with wellness coach, author and teacher, Kathy Robinson, about the principles of holistic wellness, and how we can all put them to use to supercharge our fulfillment and success, at work and in life. Kathy is the founder of Athena Wellness, a practice and consultancy where overworked professionals can pause to gather and reconnect with abundant vitality and optimized well-being. Her most recent book is The Athena Principles: Simple Wellness Practices for Overworked Professionals.

Anyone who knows me knows that I believe that wellness and a holistic approach to health are fundamentally important to being successful, both at work and as a human being in general. Kathy believes the same, and has taken that conviction to an even higher level by making it her life’s work to help others, especially overworked professionals, optimize their well-being and embrace the spectrum of holistic wellness. I think most of us know what it’s like to be overworked, and right now even if we aren’t overworked, we are certainly “overstressed,“ so Kathy’s message couldn’t be more timely.

While we are generally all smart enough to know what you need to do to get out of whatever wellness rut we’re in, but we often don’t have the time or inclination to learn how to make an impactful shift. It was out of wrestling with these quandaries as a corporate executive that spurred Kathy to found Athena Wellness. There she developed a framework and simple practices that helped identify and track incremental steps that led to meaningful and lasting change, and that is what she offers to her clients.

I love Kathy’s holistic definition of wellness as going beyond mere exercise and nutrition, to include mindfulness, creativity, aligned livelihood, inner work, relationships and new adventures. I also loved her book and believe it really provides great value for anyone who feels they could benefit from more wellness in their lives, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested. All in all, another great conversation with a wonderful guest about a topic that is timely and fundamentally relevant to all of us. This is a must-listen especially for those in leadership positions, because we have a duty to all those we serve to make sure that we are best positioned to do so; if we’re neglecting our own health and well-being, then we are abandoning those who look to us for leadership. As a wise man once said, “Physician, heal thyself!“ In any case, be sure not to miss this episode!

Some topics discussed in this episode include:

  • How Kathy discovered her passion for wellness and helping others achieve it, coming out of corporate career where that seemed an unlikely path.

  • Why it is best to look at wellness as a spectrum, and how harnessing that understanding can unlock levels of performance and satisfaction we have never experienced before.

  • The importance of self-compassion, and self-care in general, when it comes to wellness.

  • Some of the simplest first steps people can take to begin embracing the power of intentional wellness.

  • And much, much more…

Prior to becoming a certified wellness coach and author of The Athena Principles, Kathy Robinson spent more than 25 years assessing the wellness of Fortune 500 companies. She was a Chief Audit Executive and Chief Risk Officer before turning the lens from professional assessments to personal ones and began helping her clients optimize their well-being, especially in times of transition or when striving toward new wellness goals. She also teaches and facilitates online offerings based on her wellness methodology that include practices such as writing and meditation. Kathy practices what she preaches and is passionate about wellness, nutrition and exercise. She believes that a positive attitude is the accelerator that propels us through transformation. You can find her running the trails in northern New Jersey, where she completed her first marathon and ultramarathon at age 54.
