About this Episode:

In this episode of the Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m happy to bring you a conversation with author, trainer, and consultant, Genella Macintyre, about the skills that can transform mediocre managers into great leaders, and the skills the rest of us can use to survive until that transition takes place. Genella is the President of Partners in Discovery Ltd., whose focus is to improve the quality of personal and professional living. In particular, Genella helps organizations, large and small, determine what needs to happen to develop a productive, profitable and psychologically safe workplace. Her most recent book is Soft Skills for Tough Cookies.

Genella’s background includes experience in human resource management, executive leadership, personal and executive coaching, individual and family counseling and program development and evaluation. She is an expert in helping organizations develop productive, profitable and psychologically safe workplaces. Over the past 17-years, she has trained and coached thousands of people including of Fortune 500 companies and even the Canadian Military. Genella also has extensive experience with the training division of the Manitoba Government and has delivered a variety of organizational development workshops including leadership, management, personal development, team-building, time management, personality and communication styles to a range of government departments.

I don’t think I have to say it, but Genella is definitely another kindred spirit. It was great having her on the show reinforcing the importance of soft skills for anyone interested in taking their leadership to the next level, as well as making the distinction between functional expertise and transformative leadership, among the many other invaluable insights she shared. This was a fascinating conversation with a great guest I hope to have back on the show again soon. I know for sure that listeners will get a lot out of this episode, so be sure to check it out!

Some topics discussed in this episode include:

  • How Genella developed her passion for helping people improve their personal and professional lives.

  • Why being a “tough cookie“—a functional expert—isn’t enough to be a great leader, and why both self-awareness and flexibility are critical in bridging the gap.

  • How Genella’s discovery of her own limitations as a leader, along with studies of Canadian workplaces, led to studying and cataloguing the 12 types of “mediocre managers“ in her latest book.

  • Why stress management is critical especially those in leadership positions, and the three styles of productively responding to stress to effectively alleviate it.

  • And much, much more…

Genella holds a Bachelor of Arts (Specialist) degree from Brandon University and a Master of Arts degree in Applied Psychology from the University of Saskatchewan. She also has certificates in Coaching and Mediation Skills. Genella is a qualified trainer in Myers-Briggs, and the Life-styles Inventory.
