About this Episode:

In this episode of The Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m excited to bring you a powerful conversation with bestselling author, motivator, and powerhouse entrepreneur, Ruth Soukup. The discussion today is a profound one, and is about something that is a constant presence in all of our lives in one form or another: fear. “What would you do if fear no longer stood in your way?” That is the central question that Ruth set out to explore in her forthcoming book, Do It Scared®: Finding the Courage to Face Your Fears, Overcome Obstacles, and Create a Life You Love. Through the course of her research, which included interviewing over 4,000 people about the role fear plays in their lives, she uncovered seven very distinct ways that we all respond to fear. Although each of these “Fear Archetypes“ are expressed differently, one thing they all share is that they limit us from thriving and cause us to focus on merely surviving. Combining her research with her own experience, Ruth provides practical advice, inspiration, and guidance for moving forward with courage, facing their fears, and creating an extraordinary life.

I learned a great deal in our conversation, and I know listeners will find the discussion equally insightful and impactful. I’m sure many will also be inspired, just as I was, by Ruth’s powerful story of her extraordinary journey from breakdowns to breakthroughs. Make no mistake, this is an episode you cannot miss!

In our conversation, Ruth recounts the harrowing experiences that led her first to her breakdowns, and then to breakthroughs, regarding the place of fear in our lives. The short version is that, at just 23 years old, she had hit rock bottom. After 2 years in and out of psychiatric hospitals, she fought her way back to start her own multi-million dollar company where she provides practical tools and guidance for women in life and business. We discuss what Ruth calls the seven “Fear Archetypes,“ which are distinct ways in which we all shape our lives in response to fear. These are the Procrastinator, Rule Follower, People Pleaser, Outcast, Self-Doubter, Excuse Maker, and the Pessimist. (You probably recognize yourself in some of these; I know I did!) We also discuss how and why fear works its way into every part of our lives, why it is important to diagnose our specific “fear fingerprint“ so that we can begin to apply antidotes to it. We talk about the importance of intentionally shifting our core beliefs from a fear mindset to a courage mindset, how getting in action is one of the most powerful things we can do to build our courage, and much more that I can’t do justice to in this short description! It was an enlightening, fascinating conversation that I hope everyone will listen to and share with others!
