About this Episode:

In this episode of The Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m happy to bring you a conversation with Jake Jacobs about a few of the “eight levers” he has developed for managing change and some of the most common problems that people face when managing change. In our discussion, Jake also shares other insights from his latest book, Leverage Change.

Why do some organizations work and others don’t? Robert “Jake” Jacobs has been curious about that question since his first real job on the assembly line of an ice cream novelty manufacturing plant and my second, tending bar in college. As a pioneer in the field of large group interventions, he has continued my discoveries about better ways for people and organizations to change. His consulting, writing, and teaching have all helped me continue in answering that question.

Jake has worked with some of the largest corporations in the world including American Express, Corning, Ford, The Home Depot, Marriott, Mobil, and TJ Maxx. He has also supported major change efforts with the City of New York, the U.S. National Forest Service and Environmental Protection Agency and the United Kingdom’s National Health and Employment Services.

Writing has been a great way for Jake to get clearer about what he believes and how he works. In addition to regular postings to his blog, he’s written articles for Strategy and Leadership, Executive Excellence, Leader to Leader, Strategic HR Review, the OD Practitioner, Consulting to Management and been featured in The Huffington Post and Inc. magazine.

Notre Dame’s Executive Education Program, the U.S. Navy’s Postgraduate Institute, Roffey Park Management Institute in England, and St. Thomas University have all been opportunities for Jake to continue his own learning while teaching others.

Before starting his firm, Jake worked as an internal consultant at Ford, director of the University of Michigan’s Athletic Tutorial Program, an investigator at the Institute for Social Research, and an interior garage painter (his first entrepreneurial business).

Jake graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Michigan and received a Masters of Science in Organization Development from Pepperdine University with honors. He now calls Toledo home once again, having returned after more than 30 years away.
