About this Episode:

In this episode of the Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m happy to bring you a conversation with author and executive coach, Amy Lynn Durham, about going beyond emotional intelligence to boost connection, purpose, and morale to create a culture of engagement and productivity. Amy specializes in helping companies increase employee productivity and morale, and she is often referred to as a Corporate Mystic due to her unique ability of providing Spiritual Intelligence (SQ) in order to energize and transform the workplace. Her most recent book is Create Magic At Work.

Amy’s work and her book aims to fill a void for individuals who may feel isolated and exhausted from loneliness in the workplace. Connection within a team doesn't happen by accident, it happens with intention, but many leaders aren’t equipped or educated to put this truth into practice. Amy teaches leaders and organizations the practical tools which elevate Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence (EQ & SQ), thereby elevating employee morale—and profitability. Her book contains field-tested activities that leaders and coaches can utilize to ignite authentic connection with their clients, teams, or employees, so that we can all thrive as human beings, at home and at work.

You can tell by the runtime of this episode, which is longer than most, that Amy was a fascinating guest and I really enjoyed talking with her. I would definitely say we’re kindred spirits in our intuitive understanding of and passion for “people-centered“ approaches to workplace culture, engagement, morale, and just just treating employees as whole human beings.

I’ve been called a “guru“ a few times in my day, so I can certainly appreciate Amy’s designation as a “corporate mystic,“ because she really “gets“ many of the essential elements that people generally find mystifying about culture. I also found it interesting how Amy was able to integrate many disparate, and what some might even call “outlandish“ inspirations and elements for her own experience into a powerful, holistic approach to help others become more effective as their authentic selves in the workplace.

In any case, it goes without saying this Amy had great depth of insight to share in this episode, all of which is so relevant to anyone who works in any type of organization, but especially to leaders struggling to build cohesive, productive teams. Whether you’re still i the physical workplace or in the virtual one, this is an episode you definitely don’t want to miss!

Some topics discussed in this episode include:

  • How Amy discovered her passion for workplace culture and morale, and became known as the “Corporate Mystic.“

  • What does it mean to “create magic at work.“

  • What is Spiritual Intelligence (SQ), how it differs from Emotional Intelligence, and why it is important to cultivate both.

  • Why workload isn’t the real root cause of employee burnout, and what is instead.

  • What teambuilding is, and what it is not, and why doing it the right way is critical to boosting morale and engagement.

  • And much, much more…

Amy Lynn Durham is a U.C. Berkeley Certified Executive Coach and Emotional Intelligence Practitioner who has spent years in the corporate world successfully managing hundreds of employees for private and publicly traded companies. As an expert in building positive company cultures, Amy designed Create Magic At Work to bring a variety of services and strategies to aid in cultivating teamwork and harmony in order to improve profits and employee morale. In addition to her work with organizations, she also offers the Create Magic At Work Membership Group for individuals or groups interested in unlocking the power of SQ and EQ at work.
