"Owning Your Own Greatness" - An Interview with Josh Cary | The Transformative Leader Podcast 046

In this episode of The Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m speaking with digital media and creative consultant, business coach, and entrepreneur, Josh Cary. Josh is better known as the Hidden Entrepreneur, because he spent 40 years hiding the best parts of himself, afraid to take ownership of the skill, talent and ability that was desperately trying to surface. This led to Josh perpetuating the false story that we have all believed at one point: “I am not valuable or capable, nobody cares what I have to say or contribute, and I’m not good enough.” Today, Josh helps his clients 'unmask' themselves by leading them through poignant, important, and direct coaching conversations, as well as through hosting The Hidden Entrepreneur Podcast. Josh knows from personal experience that building or growing a business is impossible without growing as a person first. Because Josh knows what it is like to show up in business and life as insecure, scared, lost or desperately seeking approval, he knows how to coach his clients out of these self-sabotaging habits to create personal and professional success.

I know that many topics that Josh focuses on and that we discuss in this episode certainly hit home for a lot of listeners. Impostor syndrome is in many ways just par for the course for businesspeople, executives, leaders, entrepreneurs and so on, and yet it isn’t something we talk about often. The feeling that we don’t deserve a certain level of success, or even being afraid to embrace our greatness, is something that significantly holds many of us back from achieving what we really want to achieve, in business and in life. I’m reminded of that very famous quotation by Marianne Williamson, because it encapsulates the situation that many of us find ourselves in, often with no idea how to escape. All in all, it was a great conversation with a great guest, and I know listeners will find great value in the insight that Josh shared.

Some topics discussed in this episode include:

  • How Josh came to be where he is in life now, and what it was like keeping his true self “hidden“ for so long.

  • How Josh learned from his children, after 40 years of fearing and hiding his power and feeling like an impostor, that he had the strength, permission, and duty to take ownership of his greatness.

  • How feeling miserable and inadequate often becomes an “addiction“ that we proactively seek validation for.

  • How to use Josh’s 5-step process, NOISE, to quiet the “noise“ in your head and get in action.

  • The importance of accepting the awkward as part of accepting who we truly are, and thus, truly connecting with others.

  • Why the ultimate question we can ask ourselves to get aligned in life is, “How do I want to be remembered?“

Josh Cary is a digital and creative media consultant, business coach, and host of The Hidden Entrepreneur podcast, where he speaks with successful entrepreneurs, creatives, and small business owners who were also once in the darkest of hiding places so listeners may rediscover their world, connect beautifully with others, and excel in all they set out to do.
