About this Episode:
In this episode of The Transformative Leader Podcast, I’m excited to bring you a conversation with family science professor, Dr. David Schramm, about the role that the personal and family lives of employees play in the culture, commitment, and success of workplaces. “Dr. Dave” is a family life extension specialist at Utah State University in the department of Human Development and Family Studies, and he has a particular focus in studying and applying the fundamentals of healthy family dynamics to the workplace. From British Columbia to Beijing, China, and from St. Louis to San Diego, David has given over 500 presentations, classes, and workshops to a variety of audiences, including the United Nations and a great TEDx talk in Florida. In 2019, he launched LifeJourneyOn.com, a digital platform aimed at helping individuals/employees improve their personal lives so they can flourish at work, with over 300 courses, hundreds of videos, eBooks, and even coaching for those who desire it.
Although I do mention it in the episode, I have to say that Dr. Dave is certainly another kindred spirit when it comes to the holistic approach to leadership and success in the workplace. His background and research as a family scientist allow him to bring a unique voice to the table of leadership and workplace culture, one that is sorely lacking in far too many workplaces around the world. I can personally vouch for the immense transformative power that comes with organizations and leaders truly caring about their people and relating to them much as if they were family. Although I didn’t have the data and research, caring for and improving the personal lives of my people—including nutritional and financial education—was a cornerstone of some of the toughest and most rewarding turnarounds in my career. It would have been great to have someone like Dr. Dave in my corner back then, especially with his online courses, as I was basically just going with my gut back then!
In any case, it was an awesome conversation with a great guest, and anyone interested in truly transforming their culture must not miss this episode! (Be sure to check out Dr. Dave’s TEDx talk as well).
Some topics discussed in this episode include:
Why the best companies offer EFPs (Employee Flourishing Programs) instead of just EAPs (Employee Assistance Programs).
The details around Dr. Dave’s study of Inc. magazine’s tops 346 places to work in 2019 to determine the cultural elements that successful businesses share.
Why culture is more important than compensation and positivity can be more important than a paycheck when it comes to work and life.
How leaders can create a culture of family at their workplaces.
